Conversion of a Listed Monastery

Our clients were looking for Architects to carry out a contemporary listed building conversion at a former monastery in the heart of the South Hams.

The Monastery is located in the heart of the rolling South Hams countryside. Our clients were looking for architects in to carry out a contemporary listed building conversion to high-quality apartments and leisure facilities. The main building was converted into luxury residential units, with sensitive contemporary design working to compliment and enhance the important historic features. The original brickwork was restored and retained, as were the impressive cantilevered granite staircases.

The timber-framed chapel building was restored and converted into a fabulous swimming pool and spa. The original structure has been left exposed, and the columns line the edge of the pool set out below the beautiful trussed roof and clear storey windows. A dedicated bat habitat was created in the basement level of the building, as an ecological survey had revealed the presence of various protected species.

The practice provided a traditional ‘full service’, securing planning and listed building consent before moving onto the production of detailed Building Regulations drawings and coordinating with PCA Consulting Engineers and interior designers Infinite Design throughout the detailed design and construction stages.

Working on listed buildings presents a unique set of challenges. We have to make sure that our designs are sensitive to the important character of the historic fabric, whilst at the same time creating spaces that work for modern living.

Work to listed buildings also presents technical challenges in preserving the historic character whilst achieving compliance with certain sections of the Building Regulations; particularly thermal performance. We have a longstanding relationship with Devon Building Control Partnership, and will often engage with them on listed building projects before a detailed application is submitted. This consultation allows us to talk through the project with members of the building control team and identify how the proposed works can best balance the technical requirements whilst still conserving and enhancing the character of the listed building.
