Bespoke New River Side Home

2013 LABC Awards Regional Finalist

Our clients were looking for architects in Kingsbridge to design and oversee the construction of their new family home

This bespoke new home is dug into a sloping site and has accommodation arranged over three levels above a large garage and workshop space. The design maximises views over the water through large sliding glass doors and patent roof glazing in the vaulted first-floor circulation space.

The semi-open plan living spaces are connected with bespoke sliding pocket doors.  The sliding pocket doors feature opaque glass panes to create a sense of enclosure and intimacy when they are closed. Bespoke staircases with oak treads and frameless glass balustrade connect the three levels through vaulted hallways.  Timber clad ceilings add texture to the tall vaulted spaces and create a contemporary ‘seaside’ aesthetic.

The use of natural materials and textures continues externally, where the elevations use a mixed palette of stone cladding to the lower ground floor and cedar boards to the first floor. The natural stone cladding forms a solid ‘plinth’ where the house grows up out of the ground, and the cedar boards were left to weather naturally from the original orange/brown to a more subtle silver/grey as the building ages.

The practice worked with Main Contractors WM Construction and PCA Consulting Engineers to deliver a high-quality piece of architecture on a particularly challenging, steeply sloping site. The technical constraints of the site, the high-quality design and the well-crafted construction detailing lead to the project winning two architectural awards. The house won the 2013 Devon Building Control Partnership Award for Best New Home and was the South West Regional Finalist in the 2013 LABC Building Excellence Awards.
