Our fully qualified team benefits from a wide range of skills and experience, with backgrounds in small practice, local authority architects’ departments and larger commercial firms. ALA Architecture is a RIBA Chartered Practice based in Kingsbridge, South Hams, Devon, bringing together Architects and Architectural Technologists with expertise in bespoke new homes, residential developments, conservation and low‑energy design. We work closely with clients, consultants and contractors to deliver thoughtful, well‑crafted buildings that respond to place, people and environment.

Andrew established his practice in 2000 after working in both private practice and the Local Authority offices of Plymouth City Architects and Devon County Property Development.

Andrew obtained a broad selection of qualifications in construction and construction law at Plymouth whilst honing his skills in practice and is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (MCIAT) and an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Building (ACIOB).

Andrew has a wealth of experience in delivering a wide range of buildings from small domestic projects and bespoke new homes to large-scale residential developments and community buildings.

Outside of work, Andrew enjoys cycling the South Hams lanes, kayaking around the estuary, and growing his own veg at his allotment.

Dan graduated from the University of Plymouth with a BA(Hons) in Architecture and returned to the Ocean City to complete his postgraduate studies, obtaining a Graduate Diploma in Architecture, a Post Graduate Diploma in Humane Architecture and winning the University of Plymouth Diploma Design Prize for his final year post graduate project. Dan qualified as an Architect in 2010, is registered with the ARB and is a Chartered Member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

Dan has delivered a wide range of new build and renovation projects, and more recently has been focussing on the practices larger residential and mixed-use schemes.

Outside of work, Dan enjoys hiking the moors and coast path with his wife and two dogs, Hugo and Bracken, spending time at his allotment, and—when conditions allow—paddleboarding and swimming in the rivers and along the coastline that Devon has to offer.

Dan studied at the University of Plymouth and received 1st Class Hons for his BA in Architecture, followed by a Post-Graduate in Architecture with Conservation, for which he was nominated for the RIBA Presidents Silver Medal. Dan qualified as an Architect in 2013, is registered with the ARB and is a Chartered Member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

Dan has a passion for the conservation, care, and re-use of historic buildings. He is dedicated to low energy design principles and is not only training to be a Passivhaus Designer, but has also built his own home in South Devon, Birdsong, designed to the Passivhaus standard.

His 15 years of experience focusses mainly on residential projects for private clients, where he particularly enjoys creating functional, considered, and beautiful spaces, whilst balancing this with Client budget. Dan also has experience working and leading non-residential projects including mixed-use, commercial, leisure & hospitality, public realm, and landscape.

In his spare time Dan enjoys walking the coast path, exploring the countryside, a bit of DIY, and playing on the beach with his family.

Oliver Mitchell BA(Hons)

Oliver holds a dual professional degree in Architecture and Planning from the University of the West of England and is a Certified Passivhaus Designer.

He has delivered a wide range of residential projects, from full refurbishments to bespoke new-build homes, with a focus on low-energy, sensitive design that combines natural materials with low-carbon construction practices.

Oliver works closely with clients and contractors to ensure every project is comfortable, healthy, energy-efficient, and built to last with high-quality craftsmanship.

Outside of work, he enjoys walking and trail running with his wife and dog on Dartmoor or along the coast path.
